Eligibility Criteria for Australian Award Scholarships:

  • be at least eighteen years old on February 1st of the year the scholarship is awarded.
  • be a citizen of a participating nation (as stated on the Australia Awards website), live in their home country, and apply for the scholarship from that nation; not be an Australian citizen, hold permanent residency in Australia, or be applying for a visa to live in Australia permanently; not be married to, engaged to, or a de facto of someone who holds, or is eligible to hold, Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency at any point during the application, selection, or mobilization phases (note: residents of Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau who are eligible but need to apply for a student visa).

  • have fulfilled any special requirements set forth by the Program Area or the government of the applicant’s home country (such as working for a specific number of years in a suitable industry); not have previously received a long-term Australia Award unless they have lived abroad for twice as long as they were in Australia (for instance, a previous awardee who has been on an Australia Awards Scholarship in Australia for four years will not be eligible to apply for another Australia Awards Scholarship until they have lived abroad for eight years); and be able to meet the admission requirements of the institution where the award is to be given (this may mean that Program Areas will need to withdraw an award offer if the recipient cannot satisfy the institution’s admission requirements). This might not be known until Program Areas ask to be placed at particular schools; meet all of the Department of Home Affairs’ standards in order to be granted a student visa. If the beneficiary is unable to meet the visa criteria, the Program Area may have to revoke the offer of an award;
  • In order for the application to be handled appropriately and openly, applicants must not apply for a scholarship for a course of study at a lower academic level than they have already attained (for example, applying for a Master’s scholarship when they already have a Ph.D.); and they must disclose to the Program Area any connections or relationships they may have with managing contractors or Program Area employees, including locally engaged staff at the position.
